Long time ago, there lived a little monk in a temple on the top of a hill. Every morning, the little monk would go fetch water from the river at the foot of the hill. The water tank in the temple was always full.

One day, a slim monk passed by this hill and noticed this temple. He climbed up the hill and asked to stay with the little monk. The little monk agreed.

But it wasn’t long before two people started fighting over the matter of fetching water. Neither of them was willing to get water. Nevertheless they could not live without drinking water. In the end, two monks decided to go carry a bucket of water together.

Life went on exactly this way for several days. Then a fat monk came up to the gate of the temple. He again asked if he could stay. Both the little monk and the slim monk consented and asked him to get water from the foot of the hill.

But the fat monk was not willing to get water. Three monks had a big fight. They were locked in battle exactly like this,  all sit in the temple and nobody was ready to go down the hill to fetch water.

Nobody filled the vase in front of Guanyin Buddha and the plants withered. And nobody cared that mice came out to steal sacrifice.

In the midnight, a mouse tipped over the candle and set fire on the temple. Three monks hurried to fetch water from the water tank. However, there was no even a drop of water in the tank.

  • : to turn over
  • 慌忙:to hurry

The fire became bigger and bigger. The temple eventually was burned unto ground. Three monks regretted so much when seeing the ruins of the burned temple.

  • 最终: in the end, eventually, finally
  • 废墟: ruins, relic, wreckage, heirloom, remains, havoc
